Shop Pennsylvania: Aromacology Co.

We have had so much fun getting to know small business owners across the US that we wanted a way to share even more of their story with you. That's why we created the #BuySmallSaveSmall Stories series! In each new post we'll introduce you to a new business, and get down to details with the owner about what it's like to be a small business owner.

Without further ado, meet Juliana Bowland of Aromacology Co.!

Juliana, where are you originally from?

I grew up on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

What or who inspired you to start Aromacology Co.?

I have always loved entrepreneurship, specifically being able to have complete creative freedom of my business.

Where is your business located?

West Chester, PA

When did your business open?

September 7, 2019

What is/was your flagship product that launched the business?

Is there a special story or meaning behind this name that you want to share?

I am currently getting my doctorate in psychology. I have a profound appreciation for not only psychology, but science in general. I knew I wanted to incorporate that into my business name.

Name three things that make your business or products unique, that people should know.

The quality of our products is certainly unique. It is hard to find a candle with strong scent throw, that lasts long, and is clean burning. I also believe that our prices and affordability make us unique. If you compare our prices to other small candle businesses with similar products, you will see that we sway on the more affordable end. I never want cost to be a barrier between my customers and my products. Lastly, I believe our design and aesthetic make us unique because it can fit almost any decor style.

What was the first major milestone that you were excited to reach for your business?

A major milestone reached for my business was when I started to build my returning customer base. It took a few months to get my products out into the world and for customers to re-purchase, but now I love seeing familiar faces and names pop up on my open orders list. :)

What is the next major milestone you are working toward for your business?

This year, I would like to expand my products into the wholesale market. I have two wholesale customers at the moment, but I would like to expand that reach.

Do you have any new products or services in the works that you can share with us?

I do not have any new products in the works at the moment. For me and my business, I am constantly striving to perfect my products and the customer experience, which leaves little time to brainstorm new products.

Does your small business support your local community or communities in other parts of the world? If so, tell us how!

Unfortunately Aromacology Co. does not support any social causes. However, as a company, we strive to purchase products and materials from other small businesses as much as possible.

In your own words, why do you think supporting small business is important?

I think supporting small businesses is important because you are not only investing your hard earned money into the American people, but you're supporting someone's dream and the hard work they put into the thing they are most passionate about! The rewarding feeling you get when you gain a new customer is indescribable, something that larger, big box companies don't always appreciate.

What is one piece of advice you have for anyone interested in starting their own business?

Commit to it! It is HARD work and it takes a lot of time and dedication, but the pay-off is incredible.

Aside from your own, what is one of your favorite small businesses to support in your community? What do you love most about their offerings?

Adaline's Market. She is an online boutique that purchases only from other small businesses. Her curated products are to die for. There is something for EVERYONE in her shop.
